  3. Kull #4
  4. Neozoic #8 (of 8 )
  5. Red Sonja #41
  6. Scarlet Veronica #3 (of 4)

§ — Denotes my last issue of this misbegotten series.

I left the latest issues of New Avengers and Ms. Marvel on the shelf.  New Avengers has gone up to $3.99, and that series was barely passable at $2.99, so now it’s a no-brainer.  Ms. Marvel has been mediocre at best, and in the new economy, I don’t think it’s a good idea to be shelling out cash for something I only moderately enjoy.

Quick Reviews for 12 Nov 2008

  1. Black Terror #1 — A little too much recap of the Project: Superpowers finale, and not enough new story.  I’ll give this one another issue to actually get going, but I’m not super-excited about this one, either.  C
  2. Detective Comics #850 — Damn, but Dini knows how to tell a good yarn.  Very good.  A
  3. Neozoic #7 — The invaders attempt to turn the people against their former defenders.  People die, and Lilli has an idea.  Have I mentioned how much I love this series?  A
  4. Scarlet Veronica #1 — Pretty standard origin stuff.  The art could use a little refinement, as it looks like it was inked with a Sharpie instead of a pen.  The heavy inks might work okay in the night scenes, but it really detracts from the story in the daytime ones.  If the creators haven’t come up with a creative twist to the story, it’s probably going to be generic Chaos!-style fare.  I’ll probably flip through #2 in the store before I pick it up.  C
  5. Wolverine #69 — Ah, here we go.  Wolverine finally starts kicking ass again.  We’re promised the story of whatever “broke” him next issue.  McNiven’s art is top-notch once again.  A

Detective concludes “R.I.P. – Hush”, which has been good.

As I’ve said before, I’m loving Neozoic. This issue is the first one that contains nomenclature it’s a limited series.  Hopefully, this is just the end of the first storyline, because I’ve enjoyed this since it started.

“Old Man Logan” continues in Wolverine.

Black Terror and Scarlet Veronica both looked interesting, and since it was a short week, I decided to take a chance.

Quick Reviews for 4-10 Sep 2008

14 Sep 2008 · 1 Comment

  1. Criminal #5 — Still awesome. A
  2. Dead, She Said #3 — This was a fun little miniseries.  It’s worth getting in TPB if you don’t feel like looking for back issues.  A
  3. Deadpool #1 — Not sure about this one yet.  Way’s trying something that I think is going to exceed his ability.  B
  4. Detective Comics #848 — “Heart of Hush” finally reveals what the title is about.  Interesting… A
  5. The Living Corpse #5 — I’m starting to lose my interest in this series.  It just seems to be floundering and not really going anywhere. B
  6. Ms. Marvel #30 — Please get Ms. Marvel out of the “Secret Invasion” tie-ins.  None of these have been any good. D
  7. Ms. Marvel Annual #1 — Well, at least it occurs before “Secret Invasion”.  Unfortunately, like most annuals, aside from a few humorous bits, it’s a completely throwaway story. C
  8. Necronomicon #1 — Mostly just set-up in this issue.  We’ll have to see where it goes next issue.  B
  9. Neozoic #6 — Loving it.  Seriously, track down the back issues of this series. A
  10. Red Sonja #37 — Oh geez… now it’s the freakin’ training sequence.  Next month it’s the acquisition of her “armor”.  Get to the beheadings already!  C
  11. Savage Tales #9 — Again, kind of a mixed bag.  “Valaka” looks to have a nice twist, “Battle for Atlantis” has beautiful art and an okay story, “Quartermain” was trite and predictable, and “Osin” was good fun.  B
  12. Secret Invasion #6 — Nick Fury: “Yeah? Well my god has a hammer!”  Bendis is really impressing me with this miniseries.  I had doubts at the beginning, but he’s really made it work. A
  13. Secret Six #1 — Gail Simone shows her strength is character pieces.  A
  14. Simon Dark #12 — Again… I just don’t care for this series, so I’m done with it. B
  15. Ultimate Origins #4 — We re-tell the Hulk’s origin from Ultimates and advance the story with the obelisks.  I think I see where this is going, but I’m not 100% sure it really does anything for the Ultimate Universe. B
  16. Wonder Woman #24 — As I stated in Secret Six, Simone’s strength is character pieces and this is one.  A

The book most looked forward to is obviously Criminal.

Neozoic and Dead, She Said have also been good since they started.

I’m excited there’s a new Deadpool series, but it’s written by Daniel Way, so I don’t have very high hopes for it.

The Living Corpse has been decent, but it really needs to start heading somewhere.  I’m getting the feeling it’s meandering, and the creators really don’t have a set direction for the story to go in.

Ms. Marvel is probably going to stumble through yet another “Secret Invasion” tie-in.  So far, every issue of hers connected to the crossover hasn’t been very good.

Red Sonja is supposedly “reborn” now, so we should be back to more standard fare for her.  We’ll see.  The whole reincarnation bit was completely tedious.

Simon Dark — Some people are going to lambaste me for this, but as I’ve said in the past, it’s the most well-written book that’s completely forgettable.  I’m just not enjoying it, so I’m not spending any more money on it.

Ultimate Origins will probably continue to bore, but it’s over in one more issue, so what the hell…
