Pull List for 21 Oct 2009

21 Oct 2009 · Leave a Comment

  1. Beasts of Burden #2
  2. Dominic Fortune #3 (of 4)
  3. Cowboy Ninja Viking #1
  4. Sugarshock (one-shot)

Slow week again.  According to my retailer, however, next week looks to be a huge one, so I’ll take it.

The last two looked interesting.  CNV for the title, and Sugarshock because it’s Joss Whedon who can write well when it’s not X-Men.

Angel: After the Fall #8 [Jun 2008]

After the Fall #8 [Jun 2008]Screw you, Joss Whedon. I want my $33.84 back.

(For the mathematically confused, that’s 8 issues at $3.99 each + 6% sales tax.)

At first I was worried I was expecting too much. I think the fact that I suffered through this for 8 issues says my expectations were too low. (more…)

Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men #1 [Jul 2008]

Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men #1All I have to say is, “Thank Odin this thing is finally over.”

This series would’ve been a whole lot better if it had actually come out monthly. As it is, all I can remember happening up until this issue is 1) Big, tough alien attacks X-Men; 2) Colossus magically returns from the dead; 3) Danger Room becomes a sentient, separate entity; 4) White Queen pretends to be bad, but isn’t; and 5) Aliens, fearing Colossus will destroy their planet, fire a big bullet at Earth. Angel: After the Fall #5 [Mar 2008]

After the Fall #5 [Mar 2008]I’m hoping this is just a case of being too much of a fan of the original material, therefore the sequel will never be able to live up to the expectations.  I really want to like this series, but it’s done nothing but frustrate me since the first issue.

Let’s start with the story.  The story started entirely too far into the future.  What we were treated to is essentially the aftermath of the big battle that was set to start when the TV series ended.  In a way, this reminds me of how Fox mis-aired Firefly by not showing the pilot and starting the series with the second episode.  My enjoyment of that series suffered immensely because I felt like I was always missing some little detail the plot was assuming I already knew.  The same thing’s been happening with this series. Astonishing X-Men #24 [Mar 2008]

Astonishing X-Men #24 [Mar 2008]Is it over yet?

This was supposed to mercifully be the last issue of Astonishing X-Men by Whedon and Cassady, but apparently, they hadn’t dragged this plotline out far enough yet, so we don’t get the real conclusion until Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men #1 comes out in April (unless it’s late — again).

I think the whole point of this series was to release the issues so far apart, that the reader was supposed to forget what happened in the previous issue, but hopefully remember that it was good enough to keep reading it just based off the creative team. (more…)
