Pull List for 3 Dec 2009

3 Dec 2009 · Leave a Comment

  1. Atomika 2009 Sketchbook (one-shot)
  2. Captain America Theater of War: Prisoners of Duty #1 (one-shot)
  3. Empowered Special December 2009 (one-shot)
  4. GrimJack: The Manx Cat #5 (of 6)
  5. Hack/Slash #28
  6. Lobo: Highway to Hell #2 (of 2)
  7. The Marvels Project #4 (of 8)
  8. Spin Angels #4 (of ??)
  9. Starr the Slayer #4 (of 4)
  10. Thor #604
  11. Warlord #9

Is it just me, or are companies producing a lot of one-shots and limited series right now?  Not that I’m necessarily complaining, mind you, since I’d rather they have a plan for a series (even if it’s a short one) than just meander for ten issues trying to figure out where they’re going with the story.

Spin Angels is kind of a weird one.  The first two issues had an “of 3″ next to the issue number, #3 had no such indicator, and now #4 is out.  It’s pretty good, but it’s going to be tough to maintain an ongoing series at $5.99 an issue.

Mike Grell is continuing on Warlord, so it looks like I’ll be getting it for the time being.  I just finished up Showcase Presents: Warlord Vol. 1 and really enjoyed it.  Mike Grell just writes a fun tale, no matter how potentially cliché it is.  It’s too bad about the first six issues being boring as hell, though.

As much as I like Lobo, Highway to Hell #1 was kind of so-so.  I hope it picks up in the second and final issue.

The new creative team takes over on Thor this month as well. pleaseletitbegood, pleaseletitbegood…

§ — Denotes my last issue of this misbegotten series.

Well, I guess I didn’t miss the last issue of Ambush Bug after all.  Turns out it was just disgustingly late.  I hope it was worth the wait.

Well, I’d been enjoying Batman up until now, but Tony Daniel is taking over, and if Battle for the Cowl was any indication of the quality we can expect, I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be getting this.

Red Sonja becomes Queen Sonja.  Last time they changed directions, I wasn’t that pleased, so I guess we’ll see how this goes.

Pull List for 5 Aug 2009

6 Aug 2009 · Leave a Comment

  1. Doom Patrol #1
  2. Hack/Slash #24
  3. Reborn #2 (of 5)
  4. Secret Six #12
  5. Sir Edward Grey, Witchfinder: In the Service of Angels #2 (of 5)
  6. Solomon Grundy #6 (of 7)
  7. The Spirit #32

Got this in a day late because I started a new job yesterday and ended up staying later than planned.

Nothing especially surprising here, anyway.  I usually give Keith Giffen a chance with anything, hence Doom Patrol, so we’ll see if #2 gets purchased or not.

Pull List for 17 Jun 2009

  1. Batman: Streets of Gotham #1
  2. Captain America #600
  3. Hack/Slash #23
  4. Incognito #4
  5. Masquerade #4
  6. Mysterius the Unfathomable #6 §
  7. Project Superpowers: Chapter Two #0 *
  8. The Trial of Thor #1 (one-shot)
  9. Young Allies 70th Anniversary Special #1 (one-shot)

* — Denotes those wavering at the edge of the Culling List.
§ — Denotes my last issue of this misbegotten series.

Unless Mysterius does something amazing this issue, it just isn’t funny enough to keep getting regularly.

I wasn’t really happy with the way the first Project Superpowers ended and was totally underwhelmed by Black Terror. I didn’t read Death-Defying Devil, but Masquerade, however, has been pretty good. We’ll see how this issue grabs me.

As I said last week, I’m giving all the new Batman series a 2–3 issue trial run and pick the top few series to keep getting.  So far, I liked Batman was the best, with Batman and Robin being a close second. I doubt I’ll get more than the first arc of Red Robin unless something awesome happens.  SoG is by Dini and Nguyen who did some amazing work in Detective Comics leading up to “Final Crisis”.

Pull List for 3 Jun 2009

3 Jun 2009 · Leave a Comment

  1. Batman and Robin #1
  2. Conan the Cimmerian #11
  3. Hack/Slash #22
  4. New Mutants #2
  5. Secret Six #10
  6. Solomon Grundy #4 (of 7)
  7. The Warlord #3
  8. Werewolves on the Moon: Versus Vampires #1 (of 3)

Okay, that last one was picked up on a lark.  No surprises with most everything else.

Warlord and New Mutants are going to have to show me something awesome, however, in the next month or two, because I’ve got to be a little more budget-conscious in the coming months.
